Australia is the sixth largest country in the world yet, amidst all that land there are actually very few people. It has the lowest population density in the world, with only two people per square kilometer.
Most Australians live on the coasts of the country, as much of inland Australia is an arid desert. It’s not all beach, though. There is the drama of the remote outback, the colourful underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef, the excitement of the cosmopolitan cities and the tropical rainforests that run from Kimberley in Western Australia, across the Northern Territory to Cape York in Queensland and down the east coast through New South Wales and Victoria to Tasmania.
The main problem facing visitors is deciding which of the 7,000 beaches they will sunbathe or surf from, which of the 2,000 national parks they will explore and which of the 14 World Heritage-listed areas they will head for next.
For more than 50,000 years the Aboriginal people lived and thrived in Australia’s unique environment. It is believed they are the world’s oldest civilisation, and their culture and art today is still a high point of many trips.
A continent and a country at the same time, Australia spans thousands of miles from coast to coast and is packed full of wonderful sightseeing activities. The tropical rainforests contain thousands of species of wildflowers. Fraser Island off the coast of Queensland is the world’s largest sand island. Heading north, you can explore the rugged bush and ancient Aboriginal cultures while trekking across the great outback, visiting the spiritual monument of Uluru along the way.
Over on the east you can submerge yourself in the waters of the Great Barrier Reef for a spot of snorkelling or diving before you head south towards Sydney’s vibrant, cosmopolitan city delights.

Climate
Australia has a varied, though generally warm climate, with most of the country receiving more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. In summer (December to March – Australia’s seasons are the reverse of those in the UK, USA or Europe) the average temperature is 29 degrees Celsius (84 degrees Fahrenheit). The hottest region is the northern two-thirds of the continent, where there are humid, wet conditions in summer.
Further south summer is more comfortable. Winter (June to August) averages 13 Degrees Celsius (56 degrees Fahrenheit) for the country as a whole. There are warm days and mild nights in the northern areas, but cooler, showery weather in the south.
Language
Australia’s official language is English.
Passport Visa
An ETA, or electronic Travel Visa is required for travelling to Australia for tourism or business purposes. Tourist ETAs are valid for three months. These are fully digital and uses your passport number as a reference number. Please check rules around visa requirements before you travel, as they may change regularly.
Safety
The crime rate in Australia is low but the usual precautions should be observed. Tropical cyclones normally occur between November and April in some parts of Australia, usually in Western Australia, Queensland and Northern Territory.
There is a serious risk of bush fires in summer, especially in Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and ACT. Proper measures should be made against the heat and harmful UV radiation in the summer.
During summer, between October and May, the coastal waters of northern Australia and Queensland become infested with marine stingers, commonly known as box jellyfish, whose sting can be fatal.
