Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain, offering visitors the choice of the beach or to dip a toe into the exciting downtown city vibes. The real glory of Barcelona, of course, is that you can combine both pleasures.
This enchanting city is a visual delight: in exploring its streets you’ll discover medieval romance in the Gothic quarter and the fantastic, sometimes outrageous, Art Nouveau architecture of Gaudi and his contemporaries.
The city’s skyline is most famous for Antoni Gaudi’s unfinished masterwork of the Sagrada Familia. It is not just in architecture that Barcelona makes its mark, however: its museums contain extensive collections of the works of Miro and Picasso. There are regular performances of ballet, music, dance and opera at venues such as the Joan Miro Foundation, the Greek Theatre and the Liceu Opera House. Visitors can also enjoy flamenco at various venues throughout the city such as Tablao de Carmen and Travel Bar Flamenco Guide, which are both located at the heart of the old quarter.
Barcelona has also made a fine art of shopping and entertaining. A three mile (5km) retail trail leads from Las Ramblas, through Placa de Catalunya along Passeig de Gràcia and up Avenue Diagonal. Most of it is pedestrianised and pleasant to navigate on foot. The city’s flair for style is reflected in its numerous boutiques and markets.
As the shops close, its many bars and restaurants come alive with festivities carrying on well into the early hours of the morning. Key spots are Barri Gòtic and Las Ramblas which, despite its medieval atmosphere, boasts a great selection of bars and clubs, including many of the most popular and trendy in Barcelona.
If you’re looking to spend some time away from the madding crowd, then the Parc de la Ciutadella is a fantastic option. This welcome green oasis features evocative statues, picturesque flower beds and a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of Barcelona’s animated centre.

Passport Visa
Spain is a member of the European Union. You may need a Schengen visa (short stay visa) to stay in the country for more than 90 days. Non-EU nationals must hold a return or onward ticket and sufficient funds.
Please check rules around visa requirements before you travel, as they may change regularly.
Safety
The risk to tourists is considered to be low in Spain. However, the Basque separatists, ETA, have been responsible for numerous bomb explosions across Spain and there is a potential risk of international terrorism, as in other countries.
