For a spot of shopping, Vienna’s most trendy outlets can be found on Mariahilfer Strasse, where hundreds of stores offer fashion, jewellery and accessories. Local specialities include Augarten porcelain, ceramics, handmade dolls, wrought-iron work and leather goods.
Laid-back Vienna does have a nightlife, it’s just a little more refined than you may be used to. The city’s best bars are in the Innere Stadt. Look out for the atmospheric Adolf Loos’ American Bar whose Art Deco brilliance can be appreciated over a beer or cocktail.
With lovely summers for sightseeing and snowy winters for skiing, Vienna’s seasons are as accommodating as the city itself.
Climate
Vienna has a temperate continental climate, with warm, sunny summers and cold winters. The average temperature in the warmest summer months of July and August is 19 degrees Celsius (66 degrees Fahrenheit), while the winter months of December to February hover either side of freezing point.
Thunderstorms occur frequently in summer and snowfall is common in winter, the latter, however, only adds to the delicate beauty of the city.
Language
The language that you will hear most of in Vienna is German, but English is very widely spoken.
Passport Visa
Austria is a member of the European Union. You may need a Schengen visa (short stay visa) to stay in the country for more than 90 days. Please check rules around visa requirements before you travel, as they may change regularly.
Non-EU nationals must hold a return or onward ticket and sufficient funds.
Safety
Austria is considered one of the safest European countries for international travel. Personal crime rates are very low and the public transport system is generally safe to use at all hours.
