A capital city high in the Andes, Quito is dramatically situated, squeezed between mountain peaks that are usually shrouded in the afternoon mist.

Modern apartment buildings and modest concrete homes creep partway up these slopes and busy commercial thoroughfares lined with shops and choked with traffic turn into peaceful neighbourhoods on Sundays.

Warm and relaxed, traditional Ecuadorian Sierra culture – overflowing market stands, shamanistic healers and fourth-generation hat makers – mix with Quito’s vibrant and sophisticated culinary and nightlife scene.

Perhaps the best way to explore Quito is to start at the top, with a climb up the main spire of the gorgeous Basilica del Voto Nacional. From there, you can look down on everything this UNESCO World Heritage Site has to offer, much of it fresh from years of renovations that have revitalised centuries-old palaces, theatres and other spectacular buildings. Of course, the city still has its fair share of modern high-rises, fashionable shops and trendy bars and restaurants.
