The Top Winter Sun Destinations

While summer is the traditional time for UK holiday-goers to take to the skies and sea in search of sunnier climes, discerning travellers know that the sun doesn’t stop at the end of September.

For those hungry for the warm weather, our Luxury Travel Managers suggest you expand your summer holiday plans to winter, too. Here are some of our favourite destinations for luxurious, high-end winter holidays in the sun.

Follow our guide and you’ll never want to participate in the summer holiday rush again.

Sri Lanka

South West Sri Lanka is a current hotspot for travellers desiring a paradise-like tropical holiday experience. If you want to experience peaceful coastal spots like Colombo and the golden beach huts of west Sri Lanka’s Galle you should get in touch with Martyn, who will arrange your flight for you, direct and first-class, to the beautiful Bandaranaike International Airport.

We recommend the impeccable Kingsbury hotel, a brand new top-end 5-star hotel at the heart of the city of Colombo. The hotel prides itself on its level of service, and we would certainly endorse it, with a world-class restaurant and butler service.

The hotel also makes a point of its conference and marriage facilities. If you are getting wed, allow us to plan your special day on the Colombo beach against the rural, peaceful backdrop of the rice paddies and the sound of the lapping waves. The Average temperature in January around Colombo is 27 degrees Celsius, so there’s plenty of opportunity to get a tan.

The Maldives

Floating in the Indian Ocean, the 26 atolls composing the Maldives are surely the cream of the crop when it comes to beach holidays. Each has its own differentiating factor, and everybody has their favourite. Our Luxury Travel Manager would recommend diving around the island of Mirihi. As well as observing old wrecks, reefs and tropical fish, you might also witness the incredible whale shark all year round – that includes winter.

In terms of accommodation, we recommend you stay at the luxury resort of Lux* South Ari Atoll, a series of bespoke beech houses, some of which are suspended over the sea, meaning you wake up literally amongst the crystal clear waves. With temperatures in the late 20s and 30s even in the depths of the British winter, you will never need to be out of the sun.

Cyprus

With unbelievable, high-end luxury hotels like the island’s first couture, boutique hotel: the Londa Hotel and a swift 4.5-hour flight, it is easy to see why discerning travellers of all ages flock to this picturesque island. If you enjoy art, we cannot recommend the Gloria Gallery enough, founded in 1977, and home to exhibitions by contemporary artists from the island and from overseas.

The work currently on display is that of emerging Greek artist Stella Christofi. For an intimate look at her work, allow us to book your stay at the special Londa Hotel, and then arrange your travel to the Gloria Gallery – you won’t be disappointed.

Cyprus is surrounded by some of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean, and while Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa are popular destinations with young party-goers, if you are looking for something a little more refined, we recommend Serena Bay, in Protaras, which is nothing but secluded, unspoilt and rustic.

Popular with locals, we recommend this spot if you don’t want to be surrounded by tourists and desire an authentic Cyprian experience. With the weather in January around 20 degrees Celsius, there is still opportunity to develop a tan and soak up the rays.
