What It’s Like to Stay on a Private Island

What do Richard Branson, Nicholas Cage, Johnny Depp, Ricky Martin and Mel Gibson all have in common? Aside from all being wealthy celebrities, they all own private islands.

Have you ever wondered what it’d be like to stay on your very own private island?

Of course you have! But for many, it’s just a dream. Simplexity can make it an actual reality.

Perhaps you’re not in a position to own an island outright but talk with a Travel Manager and a dream stay on a private island can be yours.

But first, what is it really like to stay on a private island?

Key destinations

Throughout the world there are thousands of private islands on offer. Some of the most breath-taking islands we offer are Bora Bora, Necker Island, Peter Island, Petit St Vincent and Royal Davui Island.

Why would you want to book a whole island?

There are many reasons why someone may want a whole island holiday. Perhaps it’s a milestone birthday and you want to celebrate in style and make some fantastic memories. Maybe it’s your parents’ golden wedding anniversary and you want to give them an equally special holiday?

Some people like to have a whole island to themselves when they are part of a multi-generation family with different family members spread out across the globe and want one location for everyone to converge on.

Or perhaps the island destination is for a pivotal international client meeting?

Recently former President of the United States Barack Obama and wife Michelle had a holiday on Virgin Group founder Richard Branson’s private island paradise of Necker Island.

The Obamas wanted somewhere both relaxing and private to recoup after leaving The White House and Donald Trump’s inauguration, and this British Virgin Islands haven was a perfect choice.

Nestled in the cool blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, the whole of the island’s 74-acres operates like a resort and can accommodate up to 34 guests, with additional room for 6 children.

Another well-known lover of island life is the late HRH Princess Margaret. Mustique was purchased in 1958 by Colin Tennant, 3rd Baron Glenconner, who began developing the island. In 1960, Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, the sister of the Queen, accepted a wedding present of a 10-acre plot of land from Colin Tennant, where she built a residence called Les Jolies Eaux.

After the breakup of her marriage to Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon, Princess Margaret would often return to Mustique to escape the glare of the British press.

How long should you go for a private island holiday?

This depends on what kind of island holiday you’re after and whom you’re going with.

But a good rule of thumb is if it’s around the Christmas and New Year, then a stay of the whole period is recommended.

Outside of that period, the usual time of stay is a week (7 days), other than if it’s really busy when it then becomes 14 days.

How do you arrange travel?

Most private islands are far too small to host their own airports and runways, so many, like Peter Island are accessible by boat only. With Peter Island, you fly to Beef Island airport, and then take a ferry or helicopter.

All your private island travel as well as accommodation can be arranged by a Simplexity Travel Manager. And if you’re after complete privacy and security, a Travel Manager can ensure you have a no-fly zone over your chosen island, so no helicopters or small aircraft can travel over or near the island and spoil the tranquillity of your private island adventure.
