With the lockdown starting to ease and more people returning to work, National Rail has stressed the need to continue to follow the latest advice from government and public health officials.
First and foremost people should ensure their journey is essential. If it is, they should cycle, walk or drive and only travel by rail if there are no viable alternatives.

For those who do need to use the train, certain simple rules should be followed:
- Plan ahead and leave plenty of time for the journey. Those travelling on a long-distance service are strongly advised to make a reservation beforehand
- Buy tickets online, on a mobile or on a Smartcard
- Avoid travelling at busy times
- Keep two metres apart from others wherever possible
- Wear a face covering
- Wash or sanitise hands before and after travel
- Follow advice from staff and be considerate to others

Train companies meanwhile have pledged to do everything possible to keep passengers safe, including undertaking more frequent and thorough cleaning than normal on trains and at stations, giving clear safety guidance on journeys and at stations and making extra train carriages available whenever possible.
