The Top Five Golf Courses in South Africa
It's common to see luxury golf estates in South Africa. In a country well known for its glorious climate and its phenomenal landscapes and vistas, our Corporate Travel Managers find it easy to see why South Africa is such a popular destination for golf lovers from across the world.
Whilst football might be South Africans' favourite sport, it has some incredible golf spots. Here are just five that our London Corporate Travel Managers highly recommend.
As soon as you step through the gate at Leopard Creek, you will see why it has been home to some of the most famous South African golf tournaments. Owned and run by Johann Rupert, the course follows the banks of the Crocodile River. Throughout the day, you will be able to spot some of the local wildlife in the neighbouring Kruger Park, and after your day's round, you can enjoy a drink at the clubhouse and watch the famous South African sun set.
Fancourt CC (The Links)
Fancourt actually offers three distinct courses, originally designed by Gary Player: The Links, the Montagu and the Outeniqua, but the Links is our favourite. In 2014, The Links was rated No. 1 by the Golf Digest SA, and No. 34 in the world by the USA Gold Digest. Given the stunning, sculpted surroundings, you will not be able to take your eyes from this luscious South African golfing paradise.
Durban Country Club
What makes this course so special is its variety. From lush vegetation, to intrusive sand dunes together with the view of the Indian Ocean while you play, this course was designed for those who appreciate a challenge. Do you enjoy the struggle of hitting a ball from a narrow tee to a tough – though beautiful – fairway below, surrounded by dense bush? Try the par five third hole, it is rated the third best in the world.
We have mentioned the ocean views in some of the courses above, but nowhere is the incredible Indian Ocean view more impressive than at Oubaai. Nestled on the Garden Route, Ernie Els designed this course to overlook Herold's Bay. According to our Corporate Travel Managers, the true highlight of this course is the 17th hole, a par three, where the ocean is the backdrop. Truly stunning.
Pearl Valley Golf Estate
For something slightly different, we recommend Pearl Valley Golf Estate. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, this 170-hectare championship course is situated amongst exquisite, perfumed vineyards of South Africa's Cape Winelands. You will also be able to spot the majestic Drakenstein Mountains in the distance as you play your way around the course, which is said to be one of the most challenging in Africa.
These are just a small selection of the incredible golf courses in South Africa. If you would like more information on the courses mentioned above, or if you would like us to plan your golf holiday for you, please get in touch with one of our experienced Business Travel Managers today.
