If you think of Mauritius primarily as a haven for package holidays serving up white sand beaches and clear turquoise waters in abundance, you may be missing out on the varied delights of this tropical Indian Ocean island paradise. Mauritius is a destination perfectly suited for bespoke holidays, benefitting from the in-depth knowledge of our Travel Managers. In the Mauritian capital, you can consider the fate of the iconic dodo at Port Louis' Natural History Museum or explore the island’s varied cultures and vibrant colours at the Central Market. There are impressive, historic manor houses in Moka, and incredible rainbow-coloured sands at Chamarel. Black River Gorges National Park is perfect for picnics, for hiking or scenic drives as its volcanic rock has a heavily atmospheric, almost mystical quality. At La Vanille Reserve des Mascareigne thousands of crocodiles and giant tortoises demand your attention, whilst under the ocean waves await colourful corals teeming with marine life.
The lovely weather in Mauritius makes the island a perfect year-round holiday destination. Volcanic rocks, lush forests, streams and waterfalls all compete with palms and dazzling white sands for perfect days in the sun.
Mauritius lies east of Madagascar and just south of the Equator. It covers just 720 square miles (1,864 sq km) yet it packs a potential for endless exploration and enjoyment. Its luxury resorts have been carefully developed to preserve the beauty and ecology of the island.
As Mark Twain once quipped: “You gather the idea that Mauritius was made first, and then heaven, and that heaven was copied after Mauritius.” And yet alongside its outstanding natural beauty, the island also offers the warmth and friendliness of a remarkably multicultural population. The island has been occupied by the Portuguese, Dutch, French and British and further enriched by African, Arab, Indian and Chinese cultures.
The island paradise of Mauritius is truly a natural and cultural delight.
Mauritius has only two seasons with minimal differences between them.
Summer runs from November to April, with average temperatures reaching 29 degrees Celsius (84 degrees Fahrenheit) in the warmest months. During July and August, the temperature drops a few degrees to its lowest average, but there is always plenty of sunshine. Humidity is at its highest from December to April but tempered by refreshing sea breezes.
Cyclones, with strong winds and heavy rain, can occur between January and March.
English is the official language of Mauritius, but French is most widely spoken. Creole, Hindi, Urdu and Chinese are also used.
The nationals of most countries may enter Mauritius visa-free whether travelling for business or pleasure, though you will need a passport valid for the duration of stay. You must hold a confirmed booking for accommodation, return or onward tickets and sufficient funds for your stay. Please check the rules around visa requirements before you travel, as they may change regularly.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter Mauritius, if arriving within 10 days of leaving or transiting through an endemic area.
A holiday in Mauritius is usually trouble free, however precautions against petty crime should be observed.
Cyclone season is from January to May.
