2017 Named Safest Year Ever for Air Travel
2017 was the safest year ever for commercial flights, according to a new report by the Aviation Safety Network.
The network found that there were just 10 fatal crashes in 2017, resulting in 79 deaths compared 16 accidents and 303 lives lost in 2016.
Commenting on the low number of accidents, ASN President Harro Ranter said:
“Since 1997 the average number of airliner accidents has shown a steady and persistent decline, for a great deal thanks to the continuing safety-driven efforts by international aviation organisations such as ICAO, IATA, Flight Safety Foundation and the aviation industry.”
The findings support that of Dutch consulting firm To70, who estimated that there was now one fatal accident for every 16 million flights.
